During the second world war, people used to sing these songs to keep up their spirits. The principal being, if you can laugh at it, you can’t be afraid of it.

places were being bombed, the people of the U.K. were laughing at their very act in defiance.
Even during the first world war, the Brits kept themselves entertained and kept morale up with stuff , such as the ‘Wipers Times’ newspaper named after the location, Ypres Belgium, where they found a printing press.
